Dr. Glenn Cummings - Keynote Speaker

Dr. Glenn Cummings presently serves as the 13th president of the University of Southern Maine (USM), a public university with close to 9,000 students on three campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn. Prior to his arrival at USM in July of 2015, Dr. Cummings had been serving as the interim President at University of Maine Augusta.  Dr. Cummings began his teaching career in 1984 as a high school history and economics teacher in Gorham, Maine.

During the late 1990s he served as Executive Director of the Portland Partnership, a collaborative effort between the Portland Public Schools and the broader community. While serving at the Portland Partnership, Dr. Cummings also taught as an adjunct instructor of micro and macroeconomics for the University of Southern Maine.

In 2000, Dr. Cummings was elected to the Maine State House of Representatives, serving for eight years before being term limited out.  While serving in the House, Dr. Cummings was also employed as a faculty member at the Southern Maine Community College.

During his time in the State Legislature, Dr. Cummings served as Chairman of the Joint Committee of Education and Cultural Affairs from 2002-2004, as House Majority Leader from 2004-2006, and as Speaker of the House from 2006-2008. Among his many legislative accomplishments was spearheading the bill that created the state community college system. He also successfully led efforts to significantly increase higher education appropriations.  

After serving in the State Legislature, Dr. Cummings relocated to Washington DC to serve President Obama as Deputy Assistant Secretary within the U.S. Department of Education. There he helped manage a $1.9 billion annual budget focusing on improving access to adult education and literacy training, career and technical education, and community colleges. He was part of a team that designed President Obama’s plan to boost America’s graduation rate by 2020, and chaired the Department’s Green Initiative, which focused on increasing the teaching and learning of sustainability principles in American education.

In 2010, Dr. Cummings returned to Maine to become the President of Good Will-Hinckley organization, an historic 121-year-old school for high school youth located on a 2,400-acre campus in Hinckley, Maine. Under his tenure, the organization used a $10.5 million philanthropic contribution from the Harold Alfond Foundation to establish the first charter school in Maine history, the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences.  

In  2012, Dr. Cummings received an appointment as Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at University of Southern Maine. He taught within both the Masters and Doctoral degree programs, while continuing to serve as President of Good Will-Hinckley.

In 2014, Dr. Cummings was named as Interim President of the University of Maine at Augusta, a position he held until being tapped as President of USM.

Dr. Cummings earned his Doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania. He previously earned a Masters of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Brown University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University.

A native of Bath, Maine, Dr. Cummings lives in Portland with his wife Leslie Appelbaum, a teacher in the Portland Public Schools. They have a child in high school and another in college.

Changes to the 2017 Annual Conference

  1. Schedule: The Annual at its first off-campus location will include a new look to its schedule. The conference will officially begin Wednesday at noon with an Opening Luncheon & Keynote. The conference will end Friday by 2 PM.
  2. Dinner On Your Own/Night On The Town: Explore all Portland has to offer with a Night on the Town that includes time for you to grab dinner at one of the many great restaurants downtown.
  3. Fitness Time: Take part in one of several opportunities to destress after a full day of the conference.
  4. Committee Discussions: Want to learn more about getting involved with NEACUHO? Committee Discussions provide an opportunity to learn about the committees that NEACUHO members can join and help run some of our many events and offerings throughout the year!
