The start of the academic year is an exciting and demanding time for professionals in Housing and Residence Life. Designed for first-, second-, and third-year professionals, this interactive roundtable provides a supportive space to discuss the challenges of opening, staff training, student support, crisis response, and balancing competing priorities. Being an SHO means wearing many hats—but perhaps none is more challenging than leading in every direction. On any given day, you may be coaching your staff, collaborating with campus colleagues, advocating to senior leadership, and balancing competing institutional priorities.

In this interactive session, Heather Quire, Associate Vice Chancellor & Dean of Campus Life at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, will facilitate a conversation about the realities of leading up, across, and down. As higher education professionals, we often support others through loss while having few spaces to acknowledge our own. If you have lost a loved one, pet, colleague, student, relationship, community or chapter of life, NEACUHO Grief Network can help.

The NEACUHO Grief Network is a community for housing and residence life professionals seeking connection, understanding, and conversation around grief and loss.

Whether your loss is recent or years behind you, whether you feel like talking or simply listening, you are welcome here.

The NEACUHO Grief Network will meet monthly on the first Wednesday of each month from 3-4pm Eastern.

What to Expect: Introductions, discussion questions and holding space for each other; introductions to grief frameworks and processing; activities related to processing grief; resources related to grief; and a supportive professional community. Folks are welcome to contribute to discussion as much or as little as they’d like.

Program Submissions are due no later than 4:00pm on Friday, July 17, 2026. Presenters will receive communication on whether or not their program has been accepted the week of July 27, 2026.
